Valencia is the city rich in monuments that represents a various architectural styles that testify the harmony of towns and different cultures in the past.

La Lonja de la seda

The symbol of the Golden Age of Valencia the Lonja de la seda (Silk exchange market) is the gothic building erected at the end of the XV century to host the trading of merchants from all over the world and all of those that were going through the Valencia harbour, that was one of the most important stops at the Mediterranean Sea that time. At the moment, La Lonja is the Cultural Academy of Valencia and a scenery of numerous artistic events and exhibitions. The Lonja has been declared a Word Heritage by UNESCO.

Catedral de Valencia

The Cathedral of Valencia located on the Plaza de la Reina was originally built in 1262 and after that became an object of numerous restorations and because of that it is a combination of different architectural styles: the Palau door is romantic, the tower of the church – the Miquelete (1381 – 1418) and Los Apóstoles door are gothics, the presbytery and the Hierros door are baroque, while inside you can find many renaissance elements. One popular legend says that inside the Santo Cáliz Chapel there is guarded the Saint Grail brought from Jerusalem.

Plaza del Ayuntamiento

The Plaza de Ayuntamiento is the core of the Valencia city centre. A trapezoidal square where are situated main civil buildings of the city like the city council inside which there is a municipal historical museum of Valencia and in front of the city council the official headquarters of the post office. In the centre of the Plaza de Ayuntamiento there are gardens and traditional gazebos where the flours are being sold and also the fountain with water jets.

City of Arts and Sciences

It is a modern architectural complex, work of art of the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava. Started in 1996, the City of Arts and Sciences is composed of 5 different subdivided structures in thematic areas:

El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía – dissemination centre of performing arts, inside which there are 3 auditoriums.

  1. L’Hemisfèric – Inside this structure there is a planetarium and a cinema of a panoramic format Imax Dome.
  2. L’Umbracle – Building composed of the parking in the lower level and also an avenue full of gardens and plants of each species in the higher level.
  3. El Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe  – Science interactive museum
  4. L’Oceanogràfic – Oceanographic park, known as one of the biggest aquariums in Europe.
